A post office was established in 1882 at the site which, 25 years later, was platted as Hayti when the railroad was completed. Hayti's name evolved from the pioneer avocation of tightly knotting tufts of hay, called hay twists or hat ties, used for fuel. The Post Office Department, apparently unacquainted with such things as hay ties, dropped the final 'e' and gave the new post office the name of "Hayti".
